Difference between OCPJP 8 Upgrade Exams 1Z0-813 and 1Z0-810? Which one to take?

Many Java developers who hold a Java certification either from Sun or Oracle and who are looking to upgrade to the latest Java version i.e. Java SE 8 certification have a common doubt, should they go for 1Z0-810 or 1Z0-813 upgrade exams? What are the differences between these two exams? Well, even though they are both upgrades to Java SE 8 exams, they are separate exams and have a different exam code, the difference is also obvious when you look at their title. The 1Z0-810 exam is known as "Upgrade Java SE 7 to Java SE 8 OCP Programme" while the 1Z0-813 exam is known as "Upgrade to Java SE 8 OCP ( Java SE 6 and all prior versions)".

The main difference between these two OCPJP 8 upgrade exams is their eligibility criterion, the 1Z0-810 allows an OCPJP 7 certified Java developer to upgrade to OCJP 8 exam, while the 1Z0-813 exam allows any OCPJP6, SCJP 6, or any of the prior Java certifications e.g. SCJP 1.4 or SCJP 5.

The other difference comes in exam objectives because both exams test different topics. The 1Z0-810 focuses more on topics that are new from Java 7 to Java 8 while 1Z0-810 tests more comprehensive topics including changes from JDK 7 as well as JDK 8.

You can see the exact exam topics on the Oracle website but in nutshell, 1Z0-813 covers more topics e.g. language enhancements done in JDK 7 i.e. String in the switch case, automatic resource management, diamond operator, catching multiple exceptions in a single catch block, etc.

Similarly, the 1Z0-813 also has more topics in Java concurrency which includes key classes from the java.util.concurrent packages like CyclieBarrier, CountDownLatch and concurrent collections. It also tests your knowledge of Locks like ReadWriteLock and ReentrantLock. In short, all the major topics starting from Java 1.5 to Java 8 is included in the 1Z0-813 exam.
